General Information

Helping Greensboro Tackle Psoriasis

Sufferers of psoriasis know that this disease can seriously disrupt a person’s life, and that managing the symptoms can feel almost impossible. For many people between the ages of 15 and 25, they’re just now beginning to notice strange changes in their skin—red, raised, and scaly patches that may itch, burn, or sting.

Whether you’ve long suffered from psoriasis’ most uncomfortable symptoms or are trying to understand what’s behind a new rash, Dr. Sean McCarthy and his team at Brassfield Dermatology can help. We work closely with each patient to diagnose and treat their unique type of psoriasis, identifying and managing triggers, and helping you get back to loving the skin you’re in.

While not strictly an autoimmune disease, psoriasis does involve having an overactive immune system which causes your body to produce skin cells too quickly. This overabundance of skin cells builds up into thick, scaly skin rashes and dry patches. Psoriasis can affect any part of the body, though it is most common around the elbows, knees, and scalp.

Some people have mild psoriasis (3% or less of the body is affected), others have moderate psoriasis (3%–10% of the body is affected), and some have severe psoriasis (10% or more of the body is affected). There are also five types of psoriasis:

  • Plaque psoriasis (most common)
  • Guttate psoriasis
  • Pustular psoriasis
  • Inverse psoriasis
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis

While we don’t know what causes a person to develop psoriasis, we do know that there are certain environmental and genetic factors that can trigger the symptoms. We call these periods of heightened symptoms “flare-ups.”

  • Weather changes (particularly winter weather)
  • Illnesses like bronchitis, strep throat, or respiratory infections
  • Skin injuries like sunburn, infections, or cuts and scrapes
  • Certain foods or alcohol
  • Allergies

Psoriasis isn’t contagious, so it can’t spread from person to person; however, if left untreated, it can spread to other parts of your body where you didn’t have it before. When you visit a trusted dermatologist, you’ll not only get the treatment you need to keep psoriasis from getting worse—you’ll also learn personalized tips and tricks for avoiding future flare-ups.

Psoriasis and eczema both produce dry, itchy, red, and irritated patches of skin on the body, but they do so in different ways. Psoriasis tends to appear in more well-defined patches, which are raised and thick with white scaly skin on top. Eczema’s patches tend to be less well-defined, and may ooze or swell. People with psoriasis often report more of a burning or stinging sensation than the intense itching characteristic of eczema.

To be sure, contact a board-certified dermatologist at Brassfield Dermatology. We know how to diagnose and treat these two different skin conditions with targeted, personalized care plans.

While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are a variety of treatments available to manage symptoms and keep the condition from getting worse. We may recommend a combination of options, depending on the type of psoriasis you have, including:

  • Topical medications
  • Prescription medications
  • Corticosteroids
  • Skincare products such as salicylic acid
  • Light therapy
  • Vbeam Laser Therapy
